Green Tulsa Tomorrow ~ Letter to the Tulsa World ~ City of Tulsa ~ Tulsa County ~ Green Country ~ Tulsa Parks ~

Feedback Tulsa Priorities ~
A GREEN TULSA FOR TOMORROW 2025

Our World depends on forward thinking,
not deep pocketed individuals banking  ...

It's the right thing to do ...

Living on Tulsa Time ~ Our future is tomorrow ....

Good Morning Tulsa World:

my 2 cents :

1) Quality of Life ~ Mental Health, Crime, and Green Living
Years ago I had the opportunity to volunteer with a beautifications group in the Seattle area (everyone loves to go there !)  planting penstemon  on the hilly roadways.

Why?  This is just one of a few perennials they plant to green up the city, support the bees (our future too ) and butterflies, control hill erosion, avoid costly, dangerous and none green mowing which only add to the ozone...

Additionally, international studies have shown that funds used for permanent perennial landscaping and color indirectly affect the mental health and crime rates of the population.

It is so vital to see the group Wild About Tulsa doing just this on our roadways.   http://tulsacf.org/whatwedo/wild-tulsa-2/

The new generation appreciates the future value of returning the land to the natural state.  Any educated person knows that our tomorrow actually depends on green practices today.
Adding nature (see book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv : Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder is a 2005 book by author Richard Louv ~ documents decreased exposure of children to nature in American society and its consequences )

2)  Street Improvements  ~ use a material that is stronger than concrete ~
Roman Concrete ~ the investment will save Tulsa time, energy and money for a thousand years !    http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2013/06/04/roman-concrete/
Use less salt on our roadways.  Encourage green / flexible hours / delayed start / opening / telecommuting so that people can wait an hour for ice to melt where possible.   http://hrcouncil.ca/hr-toolkit/workplaces-flexible.cfm
Our roadways, environment, vehicles are all suffering from the use and overuse of salt.

NO brine.   Any product used in our city with more chemicals is bad.   We live next to a river.  We want a living river.   Europe killed the Rhein.   We will too.
LANDSCAPE !!  TREES TREES TREES   ~  Are we still Green Country ?    I visited Missouri recently and THAT is GREEN Country !!!   Plant Oak, Willow, Crape Myrtle of all Colors, Chaste Trees, Yucca, Sage, NATIVE PLANTS,

Sage, More Xeriscaping ...  non irrigation dependent plants!!!
Economic Development ~ with beautification, the economic development will come.
Skip the 4.5 million on more Golden Driller bronzes ~ don't need them.  Spends millions on permanent shade and beauty giving landscaping: more trees, flowers (non dependant on irrigation)

Crepe Myrtles, Oaks, Chaste Trees, Sage, Lilies, Yucca, more !
Work with Barry Fugatt and the Linnaeus Garden to ascertain which plants will bloom each month for a continuous cycle of beauty throughout the year and are best for our future climate, roadways and public gardens / landscaping.

Tulsa will only benefit long term from greater education of the needs of city horticulture and landscaping.   What we see and surrounds us affects of emotions, mental health, productivity, and even has proven to lower crime.

Offer opportunities for children and teens to volunteer planting in and around the City of Tulsa, just as the Tulsa Library offers opportunities for teens to volunteer with the Summer Reading program.

Oil is passé, wind and solar are our future.    Think tomorrow.
Neighborhood Beautification ~ Trees, Trees, Trees, Xeriscaping (often incorrectly spelled zero-scaping or xeroscaping) is landscaping and

All public, private, and home schooled children should, in their K-12 development have at least one trip (or one free ticket) to ALL of the Museums.  They are non-profits, they can afford this.

NO GREAT RAFT RACE :  OUR RIVER DOES NOT NEED THE TRASH GENERATED BY THIS EVENT ~ MANY RAFTS ARE CONSTRUCTED FROM STYROFOAM WHICH NEVER BIODEGRADES.
